Repeated shortcuts to Application Data in USer\Appdata\Local\Application Data
1. When I click Appdata\Local I get a list of folders including Application Data 2. When I click this folder I get a single file - a shortcut to Application Data. 3.When I click on this shortcut I get the full list of folders (inc Application Data) that I saw under Local as in 1) 4.Clicking on Application Data Folder then gives me a short cut again and on and on it goes!!! Across the top of my Explorer I have Mike/Appdata/Local/Application Data/Application Data/Application Data/Application Data/Application Data/ and it just keeps going - for how long ?? Not sure. How do I fix this as it plain stupid - I don't know how it got l,ike this and despite buying Win7 Pro and using 64 ver I get no user support for a product thats not perfect unless I pay more.

Hi Mike, Thanks for the post! The Application Data folder in that location is not a normal folder. It is a folder Junction and is normally hidden, by default. The only reason that the junction exists is to redirect legacy applications, that are hard coded to look for that folder, to the new location in Windows 7. The new location is the C:\Users\myuserid\AppData\Local folder.(For details: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc778976%28WS.10%29.aspx). Since junctions aren't real folders, it is not possible to access them. The permissions on these Junctions and Symbolic Links should be set to Everyone/Access Denied. This problem sounds like the permissions on that Application Data junction may have been changed. Did you change any folder permission list before? You may encounter some unexpected behaviors after you change the default permissions on such system folders. If you did, please reset the permission (Everyone/Access Denied) to resolve this problem. Hope it helps. Hi Miya Yao.. Its getting a bit confusing so lets calarify my situation. I am referring to (as you mentioned) C:\users\myusername\appdata\local\. When I access that it lists a large number of program folders ie Adobe etc etc and of course the Application Data folder - its when I click on this "Application Folder", that I get a short cut to "Application Folder" Clicking on that shortcut brings back the folder content of C:\users\myusername\appdata\local\ and as I mentioned Applcation Data is one of those. Clicking on that reapeats all of the above. (There was an Admin permission to access Application Data folder so I changed that back to Deny All except System. Problem is - I have a program that auto deletes all unnecessary files, web history etc etc and it now screwed up and won't work because its trying to test for and delete unnecessary temp or whatever files located in this C:\users\myusername\appdata\local\application data\ shortcut to Application data\Application data\shortcut to Application data\Application data\shortcut to Application data\ etc etc etc I have retested my "clean up' program after changing permissions to Deny and it still cannot do its job - Reports "too many files" and crashes.. UP TO NOW ITS HAS WORKED FINE AND I HAVE NOT NOTICED THIS REPEATING FOLDER SITUATION BEFORE. I hope this makes the situation clear (if I was a bit confusing in my first post) To further confuse things I gave just checked another PC on Win 7 - (Hidden files etc set as viewable) and when in their C:\users\username\Appdata\local\ folder there is no Application Data folder !!
